A night in the life

Here is my sleep log from last night:

The highlights:
Total number of night wakings: 9
Longest strech of sleep: 2:15
Total amount of sleep 10:36
Total time awake: 2:00

I think I feel asleep sometime after 11:30.

*this stretch of time he was in our bed. After him being awake for so long we couldn't do it anymore and knew he would fall asleep in our bed (we lasted 45 mins in his room and then brought him in with us and it took another 30 for him to fall asleep.) I know it isn't ideal to send mixed messgaes like this but after a week of sleeping like this can you really blame me?

Have you tried adjusting the temperature in the room? Perhaps rig pictures of yourselves around his crib so he doesn't feel afraid?

When he wakes up for 1 or 2 minutes, are you going to him? I know you're not a fan of CIO, but maybe let him suffer for a minute or two -- my books tell me that babies often wake at the end of a REM cycle and might cry for a minute -- but will go right back to sleep UNLESS they get into the habit of you intervening ...

How does he sleep during the day? Is he a sound sleeper for long periods of time during the day or are his daytime naps just as short?-Elaine

I guess this post required more info. These are the times when I went in and how long I stayed. There were times when he made noise that I didn't go in and he settled himself. Part of the plan is responding quickly at the beginning and getting him back to sleep as fast as possible in whatever means possible. I have decided Colin is suffering from chronic sleep deprivation and so I have to get some serious sleep in him before I can move forward. And to answer Elaine's questions his naps are just as bad. Yesterday he took two 15 min naps and an an hour nap ON ME, just to get him to sleep a while.

WOW....He doesn't know what he is missing...naps are the best thing in the world. I hope things get better soon.-Elaine

Hello Becky & cutie Colin! I stumbled across your blog last year. As a new mom myself (my baby was also born in July 2008!), I really enjoy reading your entries and find them quite insightful. And I completely commiserate with your sleep issues. Please excuse me if this seems to be unsolicited advice ... but recently, we had a revelation that BB may have been waking up constantly throughout the night b/c of her diaper (she's a heavy wetter). But since we switched to using a pocket diaper (+ stuff in an extra microfiber/hemp doubler) instead of our regular diaper service cloth diapers at nights, our BB has been able to sleep for at least 4-5 hours straight.

Might Colin be sensitive about wet diapers, too?

Temperature I have zero control over in our apartment.. The only thing I can do is open a window but that would be worse. Colin's room is actually the most comfortable room in the house. As for the diaper I tried doubling up the g-diaper liner and that didn't seem to do anything. I'm actually using 7th gen's overnight now. We have had some leak issues with the g's because Colin is growing. The last thing I need is to have him wake up because he is soaking wet. We typically change him at least once during the night or we do find a heavy diaper wakes him up around 5 or 6am and if we change him then, forget it hes up for the day.

To respond to Erin's comment.. NOW YA TELL ME!! I'm not really sure when he started waking up after every sleep cycle but I failed to notice it until it was too late and I had already responded everytime.. I seriously wish I read this book while I was pregnant.
